The public service companies, the Swedish Broadcasting Corporation (Sveriges Radio) and the Swedish Educational Broadcasting Company (Utbildningsradion) are the only nationwide programme companies. These companies also broadcast digital radio.
Broadcasting of local commercial radio began in 1993 in Sweden. By local commercial radio is meant privately owned radio channels, financed by commercials. At present, there are 89 licences and it is estimated that about 75% of the Swedish population can receive local commercial radio and that around 35% listen to it every day.
The third form of radio is community radio which means local radio for community activities. Community radio is the radio of local non-profit associations and is intended as a channel of communication for these associations. Community radio began in 1979. A licence from the Swedish Radio and TV Authority is required for broadcasting. The total number of licence holders has stabilised to about 1 000.
Internet radio has become a natural complement to analogue radio. Most radio stations are also transmitted on the Internet. There is also a wide range of radio stations that can only be heard on the Internet.
