About four million Swedish households have access to a television receiver. The broadcasts may be analogue or digital. About 50 percent receive programmes via cable television networks, about 30 percent via terrestrial broadcasts and about 20 percent via satellite broadcasts.
The Swedish Radio and Television Authority shall issue all licences to broadcast television other than public service radio and television (SVT & UR).
There is no licence required to transmit satellite television. However, under certain conditions the satellite broadcaster (the company that compiles and is responsible for all or part of a programme service) must register with the Swedish Radio and TV Authority.
There is no licence required to transmit programmes on cable networks in Sweden. However, anyone sending original broadcasts via cable must register their broadcasting activity with the Swedish Radio and TV Authority.
